Letter from a Gurmukh to one of the Aspiring Souls
My dear Child,
Your sadness about your not being able to do enough Simran being busy in your
duties is reasonable and justified. The very thought of your feelings of your shortcoming
about Simran is very hopeful and gratifying. This shows that your soul is improving and
developing. Just imagine about the world around you, who does not even think or feel the
necessity of Simran.
My dear child, carry on your duties as best as you can, but always remember Guru
Nanak with loving passion, as a mother remembers her child, though thoroughly busy.
You should be very particular in doing Simran regularly, even for a few minutes, in the
morning on waking up and at night when going to sleep. Also try to snatch out or steal
minutes or moments for Simran, when walking, driving, bathing, dressing and doing other
odd works. It is a matter of your persisting efforts with single-purposeness and intense
loging and hunger for Nam.
Being capable of active divinity in inspirational touch with the Divine Spirit, is ‘nwm
jpnw’ (Nam Japna) i.e., repeating His Name. Simran or Remembrances is ‘Love of God’
in action. His Name is He himself. The Word ‘vwihgurU’ (Waheguru) is God.
• With the word on our tongue, God is in our Voice
• With the Word in our mind, God is in our Mind.
• With the Word in our soul, God is in you Soul
We may thus find the ‘Infinite’ in Man, and Man in the ‘Infitine’
Simran of some kind, no one can escape, as the mind is always thinking, remembering
or doing Simran of ‘something’, on which he has set his mind. It may be the face of
woman or man, friend, an object, some desire, ambition, even greed or lust, which he is
always remembering or repeating to himself. If not God, the Spirit of the evil fills him and
possesses him. We just have to change the object of Simran, i.e. from worldly things to
Divine Spirit or ‘Nam’.
• ‘Simran’ of God is the highest state of Love, which gives True Divine Life.
• ‘Simran’ is the true builder – slow and silent architect of the Soul.
• ‘Simran’ is the ascent to the Moral and Spiritual Life.

My dear blissful divine Bauji and Mammyji,

I wish to bow down and touch your holy fateh. I am always late in writing a letter.
I do apologize for that.
No doubt God is all and ever graceful. He is out-pouring His grace on to
the aspiring souls. Hungry souls came and quench their thirst. It is sure that in
this age when people are burning in the fire of maya, Sun of spirituality has risen
to deliver soothing rays of amrit. The fountah head of God is showering grace
on to the seekers after God.
People whose spiritual faculties are so fogged and cloaked with gross
covering of mind and maya can hardly believe such abundance of infinite grace
storming ths Sadh Sangat.
Commissioned from above the saints-Godmen do came and give free to
the suffering humanity the gift of Nam. He gives so much to the aspirants that
they find no vessel to hold it and it overflows their being and flows in waste,
people bathe in the nector of their love, the guice of life.
Many people get wonder-struck as they find the atmosphere in Sangat
fragrant and rich in divine joy and peace perfumes flew about all-round in the
gathering. It is all due to your cosmic presence in the Sangat. We can see the
living miracls how the inner touch of the mother consciouness washes the
consciousness of all seekers. This inner touch is al-chemical, it is hoaling
people’s minds and as well as bodies. The souls feel so brimful of the divine
charm, spiritual touch, taste and scent.
It is really a divine wonder that Gurus brought the simplest way of lifting
one’s well of illusion by

Naming Him in the company of illuminated and Awakened souls- Master souls-
(whether in physical or cosmic presence) is the loast troublesome and most
enlightening. Whatever is written in holy books can only be understood when it
come into personal experience.

With Guru Nanak’s grace, samagams are being held frequently. Many new
souls are flooding the samagams. There was a main Samagam in March with
Azad Singh many aspiring souls came. It was a unique opportunity for those
people to breathe in the holiness of divine presence. They were captivated with
the infections Nanak love they found in the holy gathering. No doubt this sangat
is heaven on earth. People find immaculate place in its presence.
After March programme there were many mini-samagams for 1½ days,
held in Calgary Zlkford, Kelona & Edmonton. Divine infections has started
spreading in Edmonton (200 miles North of Calgary). Many aspirants have been
touched with the magnetic and heart-rounding love divine in the Sangat.
It is of great surprise to everybody that something miraculous, glorious,
wonderful, all divine and spiritual is happening in the sublime gathering. Wherever
this Nanak’s family goes- there is a bombardment of love and grace. People
get shocked and thrilled in the divine presence.
Then there was a main Samagam in vancouver from May 16-19 May souls
were infected & inspired & uplifted Sangat from various places like Toronot,
Edmonton, Calgary, Elekford and many other towns joined the programme. It
was melodious and very inspiring presentation.
Last week end, we had another mini-programme at Calgary, Seekers
flocked in the congregation. Week end we are going to Elkford. The loving and
devoted.
Family intensly desired for another chance to serve the Nanak family. We
all are going for 1½ days holy gettogether. Earnest souls from Vancouver &
Edmonton will also join.
This month-end programmed is at Toronto (from June 27 to July 1). We
all are flying. Next programme will be in Montreal at............... place.
All those samagams bring a something breeze laden with the perfume of
divine joy, peace & bliss. New history is being created in the world of divinity &
spiritualism.

Our Dearest Bauji and Mattaji,
We have been to many Samagams and enjoy them very much. There is too much love at
the Samagams. This love is found nowhere else. This love is made of something that we do not
have anywhere else. It is amazing that one cannot find this elsewhere. It is so unique that you only
find it in Sangat. This love is so powerful that when you are with it, you feel too much love for God
and those around you.
Through the love and kindness of Bauji, Mattaji and the Sangat, I have found a good life.
Our whole family has found a good life. Though your grace the Sangat is always with us.
God is everything - we have only to realize this. God decides what he wants to show man.
Man says, “What has God shown me?” God has everything. When and what God shows, God
decides.
Bauji and Mattaji, when looking at this earth and then imagining that Sangat could be
everywhere, I realize how special are those chosen to be in Sangat.
There was so much love at the Samagams we recently attended. At Montreal I felt too
much love and we must realize this love that God has for us. This love is waiting for us inside and
we must do everything possible to be it. Since it cannot be gotten by thinking about it, it must
come from the inside, and when it does, you will know that you had the feeling first and then
thought about it. If you only think about it, the feeling did not come first.
With the love and grace of Bauji, we have a wonderful Sangat. There is too much grace
that comes from you. This entire concept of grace I never thought about before I came to Sangat.
When I came to Sangat I heard from blessed souls, including you, that grace is to be received
and we should get it, that it is very important to get. Grace only heppens when God decides.
When you said, “Did I soar?”, I definitely did. This could not be explained in words. Where words
end, feelings begin. When something comes to you by grace, it just happens, and not one word
would bring grace or not give you grace. Only God gives it.

First of all I would like to thank God for His grace on me, and blessings / divine love from
both of you which made it possible for me to attend the samagam. Certainly I feel extra-ordinary
fortunate to be one of those attending Samagam, who could taste and experience ‘Heaven on
Earth’ on ‘Such Khund’ in Dodra. Of course without the grace of Satguru and blessings & divine
love from you both, this would not have been possible for me. Thank you kindly for giving me so
much love and pampering me like a spoiled child. I felt like a child when I was close to you and
made up my heart cry with love and devotion for both of you and you made me feel as if I knew you
for many years and may be from my past life also (only God and you know). I felt secure and
protected like a grand child or child with his grand parent / parents. I do appreciate and thank you
for giving me extra time for allowing me to take pictures.
All my life was in search of a ‘Mahapursh’ and when I saw you Baooji, my search ended.
Also I was in need of a sangat who were trully seeking God and I had experience of my first
Samagam in Sept. 90 in St. Louis which quenched that thirst in me. Through the selfless love of
Sangat I was able to come in contract with you and Mataji. Again I praise the Almighty for His
grace on me for all that happened since Sept. 1990.
Encouraged me so much with his love and made it possible for me to write to you last
January and then came and have your ‘Darshan’. You helped me throughout the Samagam at
Dodra and took really good care of me. He gave me so much love too.
Now regarding Dodra, I have never come across any place on this earth in my life which is
bubbling with so much selfless love and utter devotion. Sevadars make one feel as if they are so
much privilaged to do seva. They go out of way to serve. One feels like one has come to his feel
‘home’ where one should belong. Love, pure and selfless and divine love is in plenty and is

available at earth nook and corner of Dodra. Right from the moment we entered Dodra to the
time we left, I experienced no change in the amoutn of pure love. I heard many testimonies in the
Sangat, how they were attracted by deep love, devotion of Sangat and their sincerly of truly seeking
God. Some of them said they never had experienced such Kirtan full of devotion and coming
from the heart. Others said “This is the way Guru Nanak Dev Ji wanted Gurbani to be understood
and practised.” Then others said they had never for it so close to Guru Nanak Devji in their lives
before, and they were so blessed and fortunate to be chosen by Him to become part of this
Sangat. There are so many testimonies and one cries with love to listen to those.
I witnessed faces of joy and bliss of those who were in Dodra. Everyone had one thing in
common. I love to be here, I want to live and die here, “this is my real home and family”. Kirtan was
the best I ever heard, and the way ardas was said pure devotion love and dedication. Langar was
served with so much love devotion and respect. Everything was so well organised. It was
umbelievable to have modern facility. In such small village located in a remote place, like 24
hours supply of water and electricity extraordinary cleanliness etc.
There is so much to write about Dodra all good when I get home I’ll share with my life and
children and then I’ll be sharing this with Sangat in St. Louis and in the on coming Samagam in
USA & Canada.
Again Baooji Mataji, I would like to express a deep gratitude of your magnetic pull of
divine love with made this poor soul able to have your Darshan and attend Dodra Samagam.

How are both you and Mattaji? With both your blessings the Sangat and Samagams
continue and we are very happy to attend. The whole family realizes they are part of something
very important, including and who enjoy very much. Does Simrin.
Since the Sangat which we attended last week I have felt currents. These currents have
been located in my heart, rather than my head which had happened a few years ago. It started
after Simrin. My heart was pounding and this pounding did not stop. It was with me the whole
time. It feels like a motor and it keeps going.
Then when we attended Sangat this past week, the same thing happened. Especially
after Simrin, I felt like my whole heart area was throbbing and it was very intense. This had never
before happened after Simrin. I felt so many things rushing through this area, Honestly, this felt
very good. When I had these currents a few years ago and they went through my head, this I did
not enjoy. But what I felt during these past two Sangats was very nice. The whole time I kept
thanking God and Bauji. You see, there is no way that I did this. As a matter of fact, it was all very
unexpected. I was sitting there and feeling all these things. I kept appreciating so much. It was not
like last time. I did not feel afraid this time. We do not know when grace will come. Then again, I
do not know if this was grace or I was just feeling these currents. Who am I to know such things?
I can create nothing. All I know is that I sat there and thanked God and Bauji.
Bauji, were these currents or something else? My curiosity is so much because when we
attend Sangat for so long, we realize that everything is God. If we feel something, It is God so
doing. Is God trying to tell me something with these currents or is it something else?

Last time this all happened, it was very intense and I couldn’t handle it. I think that now I

THE SIMPLE WAY

The way of love is the simple way, And he who would walk the way of love need not torment
his body, nor practise exercise in breath-control nor travel to places of pilgrimage far-off.
He was a bhakta (devotee) of God. I saw him every day at the evening satsang (fellowship
meetings), singing lustily the Name of God : and as he sang, tears flowed from his eyes. His hair
were turning grey, but the joined in the Kirtan (chanting God’s Name) with the fervour and
enthusiasm of youth.
He met me, one day, with a look of sadness in his eyes, “What ails thee, O bhakta of
God?” I asked.
And he answered :- “I have with me a guest who is a disciple of a great yogi. And last
night, as we spoke to each other, my guest asked If I practised pranayama (breath-control). On
learning that I know nothing of pranayama he said to me that I had wasted my life in vain and that
unless I mastered pranayama, I could not advance towards God-realisation. This is what worries
me!”
I said to him :- “Brother! you do not need to worry. The paths that lead Godward are many.
The path followed by your guest is one not the only one. What is essential to his path may not be
necessary to yours. You walk your way and let your guest walk his. All ways, all paths, ultimately,
head to Him, - the One without a second!”
And I proceeded to tell him that some of the greatest Saints of Humanity, - Sons of Light.
Friends of God, - did not practise pranayama, “Why”, I said to him, “Belowed Dadaji (Sadhu T.L.
Vaswani) did not do pranayama - exercise. When he was asked if he practisied pranayama,
Dadaji gaye a simple answer :- “My pranayama is Rama Nama!”
pranayama and asanas seem to be the fashion nowadays. And the idea is gaining
papularity that unless a man learns breath-control and is able to sit in particular postures, he
cannot grow spiritually. Nothing can be far from the truth. Pranayama and asanas have their
place in building up a vital, vibrant body, but are not essential to spiritual unfoldment. It is not
incumbent on the seeker after God to practise breathing exercises : his breadth will automatically
become deep and rhythmical in the measure in which his life becomes pure and his consciousness
expands. “Purity is Yoga!” the words ring in my ears, again and again. In these words is summed
up the very first lesson which Beloved Dadaji gave me, forty-two years ago.
The great spiritual Teachers of Humanity have never insisted that seekers after God should
sit in combersome and unnatural positions. They have always recommended that in hours of
silence, seekers should sit in postures which they find natural and easy. In our own days, Sri
Aurobindo Ghose, one of the leading authorities on yoga, did not attach undue importance to
asanas, pranayama or concentration on nerve centres or organs. According to him what was
essential was the lifting up of the individual’s level of conciousness. Maharishi Ramana, too, did
not regard yogic asanas as essential to spiritual unfoldment.
Beloved Dadaji was once asked :- “What are the obstacles in the way of yoga (unioe with
God)?” And he answered that the obstacles were these :- (1) greed to gold; (2) love of pleasure;
and (3) lust for power. These three lead a man astray, dragging him into the very abyss or
worldiiness.

The one thing essential to yoga is ekagrate, one-pointedness of the mind. The mind must
become steady,- as a flame that flickers not. Beautiful are the words of the Gita :-
The yogi true,-
With mind controlled,-
Absorbed in the Eternal,
Is even as a lamp
Burning in a windless place
With flame which flickers not!
What disturbs mind and makes it “flicker” is the wind of worldliness. There are lamps
enclosed in glass cases : they are called “hurricane lanterns”, Storms may blow outside : they do
not touch the flame : it continues to burn steady and bright. Living in the world, as we do, our
minds cannot remain steady without a protecting influence : it is sadh-sanga, fellowship with the
Pure Ones. Blessed among men is be who lives in fellowship with a satpurukha, a satguru, a
tatwa-darshinali a seer of the Secret that is God a Truth-realised Master Such an one helps the
seeker to discipline the mind. The mind which wavers, the mind which is unsteady, coming under
the purifying influence of a God realised soul, becomes steady, unflickering. Consciously or
unconsciouly, the seeker is led along the path of vasana-tyaga (renunciation of desire) and
vairagya (detachment) to purilication. And when the mind is purified, a higher centre wakes up
and the seeker no longer doubts : he sees, he knows!
The problem of spiritual life is that of finding a satguru, a Saint a Master. Having found
such an one, all we have to do is to surrender ourselves to him to walk the way of implicit obedience.
Nothing else is necessary Neither paranayam nor asanas, neither pujas nor tapas, neither
recitations from scriptures nor elaborate aratis are needed. What is needed is loving surrender
to the Master. He is the ever-compassionate one. He wakes us give us a lamp by which we may
walk in the darkness of this world. He opens up within us reserves of shakti (spiritual strength)
that we may not be bewitched by the attractions and allurements of maya (phenomenal existence).
He transmute our senses and our minds, he purifies and illumines our heart. And holding us by
the hand, he leads us on the Path, until the curtain drops, the veils are withdrawn, and we behold
the Beloved, face to face.
A learned scholar, well-versed in Vedantic lore, asked Sri Ramakrishna :- “Can you tell
me the difference between knowledge, knower and the object know?” Sri Ramakrishna smiled
and his eyes flashed a look of compassion, as he answered :- “I know not the niceties of learning.
I only know that the Divine Mother is and that I am Her son!”
“How far can knowledge lead you?” Sri Ramakrishna asked again and again, and added
:- “Knowledge can take you at best, to the outer court of God. If you would enter into His inner
chamber, be dredched in love!” “Love” he said, “is the divine path meant specially for the age in
which we live.”
The way of love is simple way. He who would walk the way of love need study no scripture
save the scripture of the Heart : and on every page of this scripture is inscribed in letters of light
the Name of the Beloved. He who would walk the way of love need not torment his body nor
practise exercises in breath-control nor travel to places or pilgrimage for-off. The pilgrim of the
way of love lives and moves and has breadth in the One Beloved.

The pilgrim of the simple way of love aspires to purification and enrichment of his interior
life. Outer things, - rites, ceremonies, creeds, - are of no value of him. So when a bhakta of God
was asked why he did not wear the ochre robe of the sanyasin (the man of renunciation). he
answered :-
If detachment dwellss not within,
Or what use is the robe of renunciation?
Will fruit become sweet and ripe
If its skin is painted red?
The emphasis in the simple way is on inner renunciation, inner renunciation, inner
detachment. Live in the midst of the world, but be of stained by worldliness. Live for God! Live
with God! Live in God! The poor and needy, the lowly and lonely ones are His rupas, His forms,
His broken images. Give them the service of love. To serve them is indeed, to worship the Lord.
The pilgrim of the simple way moves along the pathways of life singing as he goes. All
around him, he spreads the sunshine of joy, He wishes well to all. He harms none : he hates none.
But to all the gives the love of his pure, diant heart. And of his face is the smile which scems to
declare :- “God is great : and all is well with the world!”
The following may be found helpful by some of us who aspire to walk the simple way :-
1. Repeat the Name of God, again and again. Repeat the Name as you sit in a bus or a train
on your way to the office, or as you work in the kitchen, or as you take your evening walk, or sit by
the seaside and gaze at the midnight moon. Repeat the Name as often as you can. Repeat the
Name with love and longing in yours heart, with tears in your eyes. Take care to see that the
repetition does not become mechanical. “Can a mere name achieve anything”. asked Sri
Ramakrishna, “without the yearning love of the devotee behind it? One should feel great
restlessness of soul for the vision of God. Suppose a man repeats the name of God mechanically
while his mind is absorbed in ‘woman and gold’ Can he achieve anything?... Chant the name of
God and with it pray that you may have love for Him.”
2. Engage yourself in humble and affectionate converse with God. Entering into the heart
within, speak lovingly to the Beyond. For this no previous preparation is necessary. Trust the
impurse of the heart. Out of it will arise aspiration rich in loving adoration :- “Lord! I am wholly
Thine!” “I need Thee. Lord!” “Beloved! keep me not apart from Thee : make me Thou a part of
Thee!” “Lord! take the wanderer home!” “I thank Thee Lord!” “I love Thee, Lord!” “I have need of
thee. Beloved!” “Keep me in Thy service strong!” This will keep the mind fixed on God. Do not let
the mind wander As soon as it goes astray, pull it back to God.
3. Establish more and more points of contact with God. This will give you soul-rest. And out
of you joy will flow to many a weary pilgrim on the Path. Be gentle with all who come to you : they
have been sent by God to your door, not without a purpose. There was a time when it, in the midst
of work, someone came and disturbed me. I felt upsel. I did harm only to myself. Now I try to
accept every, interruption as His appointment. And I know how light and happy feels the heart that
rejoices in the will of God.
4. He who loves God fears to do anything which may displease God. He strives to grow,
from more to more, in purity of thought, world and deed. And if perchance deliberately or otherwise,
he departs from the light and thinks says or does something wrong, he will not hesitate in asking
for forgiveness.

5. Whatever w do, be it a lowly act such as sweeping a room or a noble deed such as saving
a life, - let us do it wholly for love of God. “Whatever you eat, whatever austerity you practise,
whatever you give away in charity, whatever you do- do that, O, Arjuna! as an offering unto Me!”
says Sri Krishna in the Gita, Can there be a simpler way of communing with the Lord than this that
we offer unto Him every little thing we do, every thought we, think, every word we utter, every
aspiration we breathe?
6. Gradually, the pilgrim of the simple way arrives at a stage in which it will become natural
and easy for him to renounce for the love of God all that is not God. Then for him the world
consists only of two, - he and God. At times, he thinks of God as his Father-Mother and in the true
child-like spirit he goes up to Him for every little thing he needs. At times he thinks of God as his
Pried: he opens out his heart to Him in intimate companiouship: he plays with Him and goes out
for walks with Him. At other times he thinks of Him of his Teacher and approaches Him with his
doubts and difficulties. At yet other times he thinks of Him as his Master and Lord and offers Him
the willing obedience of a servant. At times he thinks of Him as his Beloved, the Spouse of his
soul, and is not tired of gazing at His beauteous face, full of tender grace. All the time, even in the
midst of his daily occupation, - he thinks of Him, he communes with Him, driving out from his
mind, all that is not God.
The pilgrim of the simple way, the true bhakta, is even like the lotus. Silently it blooms :
silently it spreads its fragance : silently it grows in beauty. And its face is ever turned towards
God. So, too, in the shouts and shows of life, in the midst of the madding crowds of men, in all the
changes of this changing world, the bhakta is not disturbed His heart is ever at peace, - still as the
waters of a lake on a calm day. He grows in blessedness. He is a lover of silence. He speaks not
much : and whenever he opens his mouth, he speaks to help and heal. Every limb of his body,
every drop of his blood sings the song of dedicated life : - “My God and my All!” He has nothing be
can lose. He has only God : and nothing, - poverty, pain, misery, misfortune, old age, disgrace,
even death, - can take God away from him.
